James Ellroy visited Zócalo for the second time (the first was two years ago) to chat with his girlfriend Erika Schickel about his latest book, Blood’s A Rover. Before taking the stage, Ellroy sat down for our green room interview.

Q. What music have you listened to today?

A. None.

Q. What is your favorite word?

A. Beethoven.

Q. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A. Novelist.

Q. What is your favorite cocktail?

A. I’m sober, I don’t drink.

Q. What is your guilty pleasure?

A. Obsession.

Q. If you could take only one more journey, where would you go?

A. I’d stay in L.A.

Q. What profession would you like to practice in your next life?

A. Same thing.

Q. What is your fondest childhood memory?

A. I don’t have any.

Q. What is your most prized material possession?

A. A chalk striped suit that I decided not to wear tonight.

Q. What promise do you make to yourself that you break the most often?

A. Short temperedness.

Q. What should you throw away but haven’t been able to part with?

A. I get rid of everything I don’t need with alacrity.
