Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas has pioneered efforts to track gamblers and helped inspire private businesses to gather information on everything you do. Once they know details ranging from your ZIP code and birthdate to what you eat for breakfast and where you’re thinking of going on vacation next, companies can target you directly. What are the risks of corporate Big Data, and is this kind of collection even legal? What, if anything, can you do to control your personal information, and prevent people from using it against you? Harvard University Institute for Quantitative Social Science fellow Adam Tanner, author of What Stays in Vegas: The World of Personal Data–Lifeblood of Big Business–and the End of Privacy as We Know It, visits Zócalo to explain how our information came to be harvested and manipulated, whether we like it or not.
